04/06/2004 Another beautiful foal!
Ancraa - Donkeywatch News Pic Well, finally Vuela Pluma who has been keeping us all in suspsense decided it was time to give her baby to the world! So on a Friday at midday 21st May to be exact, I happened to look down the finca to see her just starting to birth. Of course she had chosen the furthest away point from the stables ! We trundled down with a bale of straw and the towels and all the bits needed and watched and waited. The foal was already halfwayout by the time we got down to her and it was swinging gently and moaning lightly. It's feet just touched the ground as it hung there alsmost out but not quite! Then Vuela Pluma lay down and with a mighty push out it came.A very large wet bundle lay on the ground recovering. Mum too lay there resting for a while and then the babe started to try to get on it's feet. Talk about wobbly, just like an unset jelly.

It was now we could see it was another male! So, we had the name all prepared and Amoretto was christened there and then! We watched and waited as Mum and babe bonded and then helped little one to his feet. Mum got up and we tried to get him to suckle. Problem was he was SO tall that he was too tall to get his head under to the udder! We managed to get Mum to stand with her backside up on the bank a little and the vital first drops he started to take. She decided then that she would come up to the stabel so it was a long and slow journey to get this little bundle and Mum slowy up to the stable and yard. Bit by bit they came along and he suckled a little on the way but it wasn't until we reached the stable yard that he finally got the idea and then he really suckled and hasn't stopped since!!

When he stood up for the first time he was 98cm to the shoulders!!
That was a very big foal to be carrying.

So, Vuela Pluma is the mother and Relente is the father. We are proud to have produced another Andalucian giant donkey to join the rest of the herd and Amoretto is a half brother to Amadeo. He is a lovely character and is already a very cuddly boy.Already he is a great playmate for Amadeo and also Aurora.I think it will be a fun summer with all the little ones. Our GVI volunteer Melissa also experienced the birth, so it was special for her too.

We are now waiting for Pepa to produce here foal which is due in July.

Please watch this space to see what she gives us.
