| 08/10/2009 | Hot hot summer & two new guardians for the donkeys |
It is a hot hot summer and all the donkeys are moving just a bit slower these days and most certainly taking a siesta in the afternoons as is the custom here in Spain. All the girlies are now down at the bottom terrace of the finca where there is plenty of shade underneath the trees. Here they potter about and graze and browse and then sleep standing up or lying down in the shade. We have two pregnant for next year. Vuela Pluma , one of the very large donkeys and also Aurora. For us it is a great achievement to have Aurora pregnant as she is the first one of our own breeding to now start breeding herself! The father is Amoretto who is also one that we have bred. It has taken six long years to get to this stage so next year will be very exciting to see what they produce. Hopefully Vuela Pluma will produce a girl for us this time. To have another female the size of Vuela Pluma and Vulnerada would be fantastic. We have two new guardians for the donkeys!!! Yes, after beloved Chico had to be put to sleep as he had a lymphoma in his throat we have been without a large dog to be with the donkeys. Happily this has all changed as two beautiful Spanish Mastin pups have been with us for a few weeks now. Boris and Marie Chuli have settled in very well and really do love the donkeys. They play with the foals and lie down with the bigger donkeys. They also play happily with Chiquita the little Ratonero dog who is very pleased to have some company. The pups will of course become very large dogs when full grown and will have a big deep bark. They are learning their manners and getting used to finca life and are no trouble at all. Just great big hungry hunks that seem to grow another few inches after they have been asleep! Great fun and wonderful company for all. |
