Hello donkeylovers wherever you are, Today is El Quivir's Birthday! He is just one year old. It hardly seems possible that a year ago we were up high in the Sierra mountains close to Jaen visiting the donkeys. We only had a long weekend and we could see that Vulnerada was vey close to giving birth! We actually stayed up there another day but still no foal! Very frustrating. We drove back down to the Costa del Sol and next day Vulnerada gave birth to El Quivir! It was maddening to have missed out like that I can tell you. Anyway we knew it was a male and that he was large! In fact he was 96cm to the shoulder when he stood up after 3o mins from being born. He is so like his mother, and has grown a lot during his first year. At the moment he is betwen coat colours! He has been a sort of shaggy brown , and at times looking distinctly sruffy , then at around 6 months the coat starts to change and now he is getting more and more silvery grey showing through.Next Spring should see him beginning to look really smart! Of course on the Birthday there was a Birthday cake made of two rolls of bread with carrots stuck all around and with a candle stuck on the top. He looked at it all with amazement and then couldn't wait to eat it all up!! Typical boy, anything for his stomach! He spent a happy day with Britty his little friend and they cantered around the paddock and rolled in the dust and generally had fun. Then into the stable at night to curl up in the straw and sleep and grow until it was time to wake up again and greet the next day. Keep coming back for more donkey news, until next time... |
