stacked followed shortly by a truckload of straw!!! Impossible to work in the heat of the day so it was early mornings and late evenings, only working when the sun was not beating down out of the sky!Anyway, finally it was all stacked into place and it was wonderful to know that the donkeys would have some good fodder for a long while. One day in September on the evening of 26.9.04 to be exact, Rosario decided to trot off down the finca and for some reason I followed her. She seemed to explore every corner and then finally came up again to the top terrace and her comfy box at the end of the line. It was almost as if she was looking for a nesting place I thought. However she was not due for another 20 days or so, so I thought nothing of it and left her eating her supper. The midevening check found her still eating etc and nothing unusual. However the final late check at 10.30pm found a wet bundle down on the straw just starting to try and get up!! Oh boy this was a surprise as this babe was 19 days early. Rosario was so huge we all thought she was once again carrying twins as last year ,so it was great surprise to see a very large female foal in the box. What a super foal I thought and a female to boot. We were so lucky to have another female. Alicia was the name chosen and she very quickly stood up and then we got her to suckle. Rosario is a really tough mother and her foals obey very quickly indeed!Rosario tricked us all last year too . She seems to be a very private girlie wishing to birth quite alone, so now we know this as she has done it for the second time now, it will be remembered for the future. |
